Melbourne is anti-Mika? The outrage!
Leanna, it appears that these pics were taken at the Bank of America Theater in Chicago, not Melbourne. First the "no smoking on stage" issue and now this!?!?!?! What's the matter with this country? Geez!
I know, but did you see her caption? "A recent script change. Blame the Australian audiences."
EDIT: Interesting. I guess this was some PR thing that several people got to go on? http://robertian.wordpress.com/2009/09/03/thing-i-learned-at-the-jersey-boys-backstage-tour/
I'm not sure I understand that rule he's talking about, since they cut out some of the profanity in one of the Frankie/Mary argument scenes in London, but it's still there in all the other productions. (Also, I'm assuming this rule doesn't at all apply to Las Vegas, since of course, that production was intended to be cut all along.)
Hi! I'm the guy who blogged the post linked above. I'm not sure about the rule, other than what the guy who led the tour told us -- he's a swing in the show. So my word isn't official or anything.
So what exactly IS the line change???
They cut "Don't get me started."
I wonder what Des didn't like anymore about that line. Sounds so harmless. Maybe it's Mika he has grown less fond of?
As the resident Mika fangirl, I will not stand for this. :(
People find the strangest things in the show offensive. Not the swearing or sexual references, it is the implied gay relationship and fake ciggerettes. In Chicago, they have started using candy ciggerettes.
Well, no one has said (or hinted) that homophobic responses were why it was removed.
OTOH, hey, welcome back, cigarettes!
OTOH...is there a wikipedia link that would help me out with that? help.
Thanks. I'm learning.
I don't think they should touch any of the lines. It's an outrage, I tell you, an outrage. I'm still annoyed they removed the Siberia line.
I agree about Siberia. I also prefer "[T]he kid's ready to play a big room" to "[R]ead the Bible - improve your mind." (That was the swap, wasn't it?)
True. I never understood the reason behind the change. And while we're on the subject, why did they change the name of the officer in the church scene from Stanley to Officer Petrillo? Does it really make a difference?
CarolB, I had the same question after seeing the B'way cast last weekend. They don't say it in Vegas, so it took me a while to see the "full" version and catch the name change.
They did say it in Vegas last time I was there. I get trying to honor/mention the real Mike Petrillo, but it's so trivial.
I noticed when I saw the national tour in Raleigh, the line was changed from "some motherf**er with a needle to some son of a b*tch with a needle comes along". I assumed they didn't want to go too far offending people in the deep south!! Also, didn't they take away Nick's line about going back to their room after a show and there'd be phone numbers on cocktail napkins? Kristopher McNeeley does such a terrific Mika, I would hate to see "Don't get me started" cut. It's like he changes his wig a little bit at a different angle every time he performs. So perfect.

Quite a while ago -- it's on the OBCR, but I know it wasn't there when I first saw the show in Jan. 2007. (The Sherry tour in SF.)

Well, that line has never been in the Vegas production to begin with. But they did put back "Rob a bank!," at least.
It is still "some mother fu**er with a needle" in Chicago. There was a short time where they spit into the flask instead of drinking out of it during Oh, What A Night but that was only for a few weeks after the whole ciggerette issue.
"Well, no one has said (or hinted) that homophobic responses were why it was removed."
You know, that thought crossed my mind. Maybe Crewe + Mika is just too much gay for some people. But in Australia?
I know! Australia is pretty gay-friendly. If they're deleting more funny lines based on audience response, I sure hope that audience isn't be London. ;)
Robertian's blogpost mentioning how backstage Frankie sometimes sings along with his onstage counterpart brings to mind a line cut from the Vegas production that I miss: Right after the big three, I think, while discussing recording, Crewe says something like "I'll double Frankie's voice and make it jump right off of the record." I always appreciated this line for its technical and historical accuracy. Is it still in all the other productions?
It is in Chicago.
It is in Toronto, but not in London.
CarolB,
I found out the last time I saw Jersey Boys on Broadway a couple of months ago that they changed the officer's name from Stanley to Petrillo because Bob Gaudio wanted to pay tribute to a police officer he knows - Officer Petrillo.
Now THAT'S an interesting piece of Jersey Boys trivia. Thanks Beverley!
I was wondering. I always assumed it had to do with Mike Petrillo.
