My experiences with the show

I have seen “Jersey Boys” a total of ten times. I’ve seen the Off-Broadway production three times, the Broadway production three times, the First National Tour three times, and the Second National Tour once. I plan on seeing the Las Vegas and London productions when they open, as well.

Instead of boring you with a ten-paragraph autobiography, I’ll just tell you about my most recent viewing of the show – October 6th, 2007.

I had seen Christopher Kale Jones only once before, and he did not impress me. His voice sounded “trained,” and did not fit the role as I saw it. But at this show, everything changed. His falsetto improved, and he seemed a million times more comfortable on stage. Not once did I hear him struggle. During “Fallen Angel,” an interpreter dropped something just a few seconds into the song, but Mr. Jones didn’t seem to notice; he was too “in the moment.” The crowd stood up and applauded Mr. Jones after “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” and did so once again after the finale. I think they should seriously consider sending him to Broadway to replace John Lloyd Young.

Erik Bates filled in for Steve Gouveia at this show. I knew he played Tommy DeVito once before, but I wasn’t so sure about Nick. He played the roll as it should be played – quiet, uncomplicated, and subtle. And then we hit Act II! Erik gave a wonderful performance. Vocally, he had trouble hitting the lower notes, but that’s what you get when you get a tenor to play that role. He didn’t force anything, though, which is good. I’d like to see him go on Broadway, too, when Bobby leaves, or perhaps the Las Vegas production.

Deven May and Erich Bergen both did well. Deven’s solo performances in the first act were heartbreaking; his voice is incredible. Erich seemed a little out of it at that show, for some reason; his timing appeared to be off in some scenes. I noticed that the microphone lift has gone ‘bye-‘bye because of Erich’s fall a while back. Now they bring two microphones out from both sides of the stage.

And what the hell happened to “Serbia with tits”?

Apparently it's been in and out of the show since La Jolla. I don't think they've used it since the Sherry cast left SF.

As if this never happens in other productions of JERSEY BOYS? Not saying he isn't wonderful, however, it has happened almost every time I have seen the Broadway production as well.

Hi, newbie here. I've seen the show the "elevator/lift" and the "sliders." I think the "lift" works a lot better. Theatrically speaking, it is more dramatic and gives the show a more modern and techno-hip sensibility. On the down side, there is that risk of accident that Erich Bergen suffered which, incidentally, I witnessed in LA. what do you guys think?

Tally, I love it when that happens (in NY). How many times have you seen the show?
