Deven May on Jersey Boys, DeVito, & So Much More!

June 2nd, 2007

In a Special to the Los Angeles Times, Rob Kendt provides an in-depth article about Deven May, who stars as the slick, pompadoured wiseguy Tommy DeVito in the national tour of Jersey Boys. Though the Tony-laden show about the Four Seasons singing group does have “Boys” in the title, May, the versatile actor best known for creating the title role in “Bat Boy: The Musical,” is all grown up now. Here’s a brief preview of May’s thoughts on playing DeVito:

“I’m happy that people are now associating me with Tommy and ‘Jersey Boys,’ because Tommy is a man,” May said in a recent interview conducted, serendipitously, in a restaurant at Newark International Airport. May, in person a gregarious, excitable guy with a darkly chiseled look that wouldn’t have been out of place in a 1950s biker film, italicized the word “man” to stress not only Tommy’s maturity but his, er, species.

  1. It’s so great that Deven May is featured in the LA Times. Good for him. He’s a gifted actor, and I have to hope he gets many more chances.

  2. Deven May deserves the very best–if there were a movie made about Jersey Boys, I would hope Deven would play Tommy. Because he truly is the best MAN for the job.And as worked his finger to the bone for this role.

  3. I had the good fortune of meeting both Deven and the real Tommy DeVito together yesterday, and the bond between the two is obvious. Both were indeed gregarious, and Tommy’s face lit up when I mentioned friends David Cace, our Four Seasons historian, and Jim Petrecca, our Four Seasons memorabilia expert!

And Susie, thank you for posting so much about each of the three casts currently performing. It’s just wonderful to see comments from so, so many fans, who truly now are ubiquitous.

  4. Isn’t Deven charming? He’s easily the most outgoing of the main members of the cast, I think. I really do hope someone gives him some work on the big or small screen, in addition to the stage.
