Jersey Boys in Chicago: Reviewer Says, ‘Ya Gotta See This One’

April 30th, 2012

Susy Schultz from The Daily Journal raves about the JERSEY BOYS first national tour in Chicago. Here’s a preview of the review:

Preconceived notion alert: I thought “Jersey Boys,” the musical based on the story of the group the Four Seasons and its front man Franki Valli, would be a musical romp through the 29 Top 40 hits from the dynamic musical foursome.

I thought it would be like one of those PBS nostalgia concerts reminding baby boomers of their youth in the 1960s and 1970s. After all, Valli’s falsetto voice and the Four Season’s tight harmonies did define an era.

But I was wrong. This is a full-package musical that goes beyond bowing to nostalgia. It has quick wit, an interesting story and the music moves rather than defines the plot.

Sure, I felt great after sitting through opening night Wednesday at the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago. But I also felt I had sat through some excellent storytelling through script, music and dance, rather than just a light, feel-good musical.
