Jersey Boys Named Among Season’s Winners

April 26th, 2006

Columbia Spectator staff writer Deborah Blumenthal notes that last year’s knockout season had to be hard to beat, with all four 2005 Tony nominees for Best Musical running strong. But as for the new productions, Blumenthal thinks things aren’t looking so great on the Great White Way. Although economically Broadway is close to reaching its pre-September 11, 2001 profits, she thinks the new season is shaping up to be an artistic disappointment.

Blumenthal, however sings Jersey Boys’ praises, stating that it was no surprise to be one of this season’s saving graces. The critically acclaimed show about the Four Seasons, with acting chops and charisma to spare, uses music to tell a unique story, rather than building fiction around the music.

What about this year’s Best Musical Tony contenders? Blumenthal thinks The Color Purple and The Drowsy Chaperone will likely vie for the best musical win, the former a moving adaptation of the classic novel and the latter proclaimed a rarity as a truly original show with favorite Sutton Foster in the lead.

Wait a minute! I think Blumenthal has missed the boat with her Best Musical predictions. Jersey Boys’ acting chops, gripping story, and four decades’ of phenomenal music has “Tony” written all over it!

What do you think? Does Jersey Boys have what it takes to beat the other possible contenders for the Best Musical prize?
