Jersey Boys National Tour Heads to Charlotte!

March 28th, 2010

Charlotte Observer’s theatre critic Lawrence Toppman has a marvelous preview of JERSEY BOYS national tour’s production in Charlotte, which begins on March 31 through April 18 at the Belk Theatre!

Toppman reflects on the timeless music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons:

They were blue-collar guys, the kind found in every bar and garage and bowling alley – and who thus gave hope of escape to the guys who were working in those places and didn’t want to be.

And more than any other group, they sang about loss. They were especially good at nobly renouncing girls disapproved of by either set of parents: girls from different social classes, girls with better futures than they could provide, girls too expensive to support on a poor man’s pay.

“Dawn,” “Ronnie,” “Rag Doll” – song after song was about inevitable heartbreak. Teenagers could identify with those sentiments: We wanted to be told we could “Walk Like a Man” after a prom date dumped us, or that we’d come back a “Big Man in Town” after kids mocked us in school.

Some of us still do, which may explain why the show sells out everywhere on the road. Maybe there’s a little New Jersey in every one of us.
