Jersey Boys National Tour San Diego Update

July 12th, 2007

Jersey Boys national tour is headed to San Diego’s Civic Theatre for a run from October 18-November 11, 2007. Theatre critic Anne Marie Welsh has an interesting piece in today’s Union-Tribune about many of the shows that began in the San Diego area that are now returning with touring versions. Here’s what she has to say about JB:

This October, McAnuff’s La Jolla Playhouse-generated Jersey Boys will have a three-week run at the Civic, exactly three years after it opened here at the Mandell Weiss Theatre to rapturous reviews and sold-out houses.

The Jersey Boys tour earned raves again when it opened in San Francisco with no holdovers from La Jolla or Broadway. That first national company moved on to Los Angeles, where it’s selling out the Ahmanson Theatre, while a second national company remains at the Curran through September, when it heads to Chicago for another “sit-down” run.

San Diego will get the first national company that includes both North County musical theater veteran Deven May and San Diego’s Steve Gouveia. So the cast at least should be tight and inspired, but whether the cavernous Civic will chill or dwarf a show born at a La Jolla theater of modest scale and human dimensions we shall see.

  1. Is the San Diego Civic theater bigger than the LA Ahmanson Theater?

  2. It holds around 2,900. Is that more than the Ahmanson?

    Thanks.

  5. The entire 1st company cast has resigned until December at least, so the cast will stay the same, other than the switch of Michael Ingersoll for Steve. Unless something comes up by October.

  6. Except Douglas Crawford, whose last day with JB will be closing night in Los Angeles.
