More Praise for JLY’s Allen Room Performance!
February 28th, 2008David Finkle of Backstage.com provides a wonderful review of John Lloyd Young’s Allen Room debut solo concert. Here’s a preview:
It was at these moments in the hourlong program that who Young is and could be even more of began to crystallize. Heretofore an actor as devoted to Chekhov as to showbiz glitter, Young has an unprepossessing manner and a trained voice that he treats with respect. Calling a specific singer the next Sinatra at this point in American popular singing is not only a cliché but virtually meaningless. There will never be another Sinatra. Yet Young comes as close as anyone…

Thanks for posting this review, Susie. It does justice to JLY’s great performance.
Along with the reviewer, I was touched by JLY’s range–from his strong baritone on The Angels’
Till” to his somewhat softer falsetto on the Flamingos’ “I Only Have Eyes for You.” I’d love to hear his takes on the 1970′s Stylistics’ classics.
While we all cheered wildly when JLY hit his first falsetto note on Lou Christie’s “Lightning Strikes”, thankfully he hasn’t been typecast in that style. His baritone on Jay Black’s “Cara Mia” and Etta James’ “At Last” makes me eager to hear him do classics like “The Impossible Dream” from “Man of La Mancha”, “Memory” from “Cats” and “Maria” from “West Side Story”.
I’m hoping this review and his other favorable ones (the Star-Ledger one is available on JLY’s blog) as well as his “going to the people” (which Frankie Valli did with CTMEOY forty-one years ago) will have our man sufficiently pumped to schedule another concert shortly.

Thanks for this link and this great review. I pegged him as a baritone from the get go and he remains true to his form. Thankfully I am still floating on his songs and noticed the half moon waning this morning and quickly thought of the full moon rising over John while looking out the window at the Allen Room on Saturday night. Can’t wait for the next JLY concert!

After reading all the reviews I wish so much that I could have been there. I knew JLY would be great but it sounds like he exceeded all expectations. I think Howard’s comments are right on.I hope I can be there when John does another concert. JLY is such a great talent. Way to go John.

How wonderful to read all the great reviews John received on his Lincoln Center performance. I’m so happy so many shared my thoughts on such a magical night. Can’t wait for his next concert,hopefully we won’t have to wait another three months. Once again, congratulations to you John on another magnificent performance. Could we have expected less from you???

To look out the window and see this glorious city in all its glory is one thing, to have John Lloyds face in between is heaven!
