Dawn Baumgartner Vaughan of The Herald-Sun has a terrific interview with Jersey Boys national tour cast member Durham native Nathan Scherich! Nathan talks about the JB auditions, what it’s like to be a swing cast member, and the awesome experiences he has been having with the hit show.

Nathan Scherich auditioned for “Jersey Boys: The story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons” more than once. No wonder. The Broadway show won the Tony Award for best musical in 2006. In late 2007, he joined the cast for the Broadway tour, which is now playing at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh.

In “Jersey Boys,” Scherich is billed as “swing,” which means he plays wherever he’s needed among the 12 male roles in the production. He alternates covering people in the ensemble, including serving as an understudy for cast members who are sick or on vacation.

Scherich is one of three swings covering the dozen roles. When “Jersey Boys” was being performed in Atlanta, Scherich played three roles in the final two shows.

“We [swings] have very busy lives, but sometimes things are slow. Sometimes we’ll have one role in the afternoon, and another part at night,” he said. He keeps a spiral notebook with details about each part, like scene changes, props and entrances. Swings hold their own rehearsals once or twice a week. Scherich already knows that he’ll be playing the role of Four Season Tommy DeVito during the show’s third week in Raleigh.

  1. I was blown away by Nathan Scherich’s role as Tommy Devito, in Charlotte, NC last night, April 13th. I thought he was the most talented one on the stage. Watching him dance as he played his guitar, or just stepping to the beat along with the other guys drove me CRAZY!!!! I have never been a fan of anyone but this guy is incredible! Does he have a fan club? I would like to know when I could catch him again. I can’t even imagine seeing Jersey Boys again if he is not playing Tommy!!!! That happened to me with Lord of the Dance. The first time I saw it, the two men playing the good guy/bad guy were so powerful to me, I went to see it again and the two new guys just didn’t have it as far as I could see. I think I’ll just leave Jersey Boys right where it is because it was just perfect mainly thanks to Nathan playing Tommy! How much in advance does he know when he will have that part? I seriously would fly anywhere to see him again.
