Dan Sullivan–From Rhode Island to Jersey Boys in Las Vegas

Dan Sullivan

EastBayRI.com reporter Christy Nadalin has a terrific feature story on Rhode Island native Dan Sullivan, JERSEY BOYS Las Vegas’s (and formerly JB Toronto) Tommy DeVito. Below is a preview:

Las Vegas is a long way from home, both his first family home (his parents Jeannine and Philip Mongeau live in North Kingstown) and his current one in New York City with his wife Cara, an Emmy-nominated hairstylist and wigmaker with Saturday Night Live, and his two stepchildren. Sullivan flies home weekly for family time, on Mondays, the one day that “Jersey Boys” is dark.

Yet, in many ways, he’s very much at home. Though he has only been with the Las Vegas production for a few months, he has played Tommy DeVito since 2008, beginning with a company in Toronto. While the darker elements of Devito’s character and the mafia connections are a long way from his Newport-and-South county childhood, spending six years in the man’s shoes has given Sullivan (whose blond Irish hair is colored and nightly combed into a perfect duck’s derriere) an intimate understanding, and deep respect, for his character.

  1. I recently had the pleasure of seeing Mr Sullivan in the role of Tommy but before that, I bought, read and thoroughly enjoyed his book. I enthusiastically recommend both seeing him in Las Vegas (he kills the role!) and reading his entertaining book. If you’re a fan of Jersey Boys, I predict you’ll find the book’s “behind the scenes” perspective captivating!

  2. Have met Dan a couple of times, read his book 3 times and seen Jersey Boys Las Vegas 10 times (#11 is being planned for next month). He is an awesome Tommy in a fabulous show. Much continued success, Dan. See you at the next show!

  3. Dan is the true definition of class. I have read his book “Places Please” three times and have seen Dan not only in “Jersey Boys” but as the wonderful lead in “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” He’s so gifted in both comedy and drama.

When I sent Dan a birthday card last year, he actually telephoned me to say “thank you.” Who ever uses the phone anymore?–e-mail: sometimes; Facebook: always; a phone call: never! What a talented actor and gracious human being.
