Fans’ Perspective on Jersey Boys

March 18th, 2006

Critics from coast to coast have raved about the Broadway megahit, Jersey Boys. But what do the fans have to say? Here’s a sampling from Saturday’s New York Post piece:

Beach Boys and Beatles fans were sated with TV movies, critical retrospectives, blah, blah, blah. Seasons fans had nothing for 43 years. Until now. The affection for ‘Jersey Boys’ is like an emotional damburst. … At long last, the national media are recognizing what the fans knew all along: The Four Seasons were great.”
- Charles, from Brooklyn

“No, I’m not from Jersey, don’t know any ex-mobsters, not even a performer. But this was the story of all our lives, our parents, families, their struggles. .. These songs always made you happy because it put you right back with the one you love to be with when life was sweet and oh so good.”
- Fran, from New York

“I laughed, cried, clapped, cheered … I broke my own rule and paid the full $111.25 price, and will probably do it again, just to see ‘Jersey Boys’ one more time.”
- Carl, from Brooklyn

“I joke with my husband that I need a 12-step plan to keep me away from the show! … People come out singing, they come out happy, they come out talking about how fabulous John Lloyd Young sounds.”
- Sheila, from Philadelphia (three times and counting)

“I first saw ‘Jersey Boys’ in San Diego at the La Jolla Playhouse. When Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons released ‘Sherry,’ I was a senior in high school. Songs like ‘Sherry,’ ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ and ‘Oh, What a Night’ were an important part of those early years. And hearing them again from people on the stage who resembled the original group made me feel 16 again.”
- Sue, from San Diego
