Amy Stumpfl of NashvilleCityPaper.com has a feature about JERSEY BOYS, which is currently playing at Tennessee Performing Arts Center’s Andrew Jackson Hall though April 5. She talks with director Des McAnuff and Joseph Leo Bwarie, who plays the role of Frankie Valli in the national tour production.

Here’s a sneak peek into the interview:

“I’ve always loved the music,” said director Des McAnuff, a two-time Tony Award-winner (The Who’s Tommy and Big River) who remembers buying The Four Season’s first album at the age of 10. “But it wasn’t until I learned about the real story of these four guys that I was convinced it would make a good musical. I think audiences are surprised by the intensity of the story. They go expecting to see a musical revue and end up with a complete piece of theater.”

Joseph Leo Bwarie, who stars as the angelic-voiced Frankie Valli, agrees.

“This is not your typical musical theater fare,” said Bwarie, who has been touring with Jersey Boys for nearly 17 months. “It goes much deeper than that, and the reason it works on so many levels is because the story is so well constructed. If you stripped away all of the songs, the story still would stand on its own. It’s kind of like having a concert injected into a biography.”
