Jersey Boys Deserves a Home in Vegas!

May 9th, 2008

Before LasVegasWeekly.com reviewer Jacob Coakley saw Jersey Boys, he didn’t understand the adulation it received when it debuted in New York, and he wasn’t sure it could create the same excitement in Vegas. Well, that was then. This show’s got excitement all right, and it absolutely deserves it.

In fact, according to Coakley, Jersey Boys may be the perfect musical for straight guys. While he’d hate to say it’s about “relationships,” its big emotional moments are ones that happen between men and the people in their lives: small slights and large betrayals between friends, divorce and dealing with the recrimination of not being the best father. This is territory that resonates with men. The heavy emotional lifting is handled with the music; the songs speak to the subtext the guys can’t, or won’t, address.

More than just an entertaining musical bio, Jersey Boys is a bracing, funny look at how men navigate through their lives, coupled with incendiary musical performances and a voyeuristic look at fame. Yeah, maybe it came from Broadway, but now it deserves a home here.

  1. I am blown away by all the talent in these shows. I have seen the JB tour here in Houston 6 times, off to London this week to see it there and then Dallas in August. Now I HAVE to get to Vegas. This show just hits every generation. Once you see this show you will have the songs and story in your mind and heart. Anyone out there – GO SEE “JERSEY BOYS” as soon as you can.

  2. I’m glad to see Las Vegas add another “Broadway” production to it’s long list of musicals!

It never gets old because after meeting the Broadway Cast, Brickman & Elice and Original Four Seasons in Times Square during a charity benefit, watching the National Tour seven times in SF and Sacramento, Las Vegas Cast in SF for Christmas, the OBC six times and Chicago Cast seven times in SF and Chicago, I’ll be watching Jersey Boys and supporting the musical until the day I die!

I figure the only plays and musicals I will watch outside of Jersey Boys would be the ones like Les Miserables in LA with JLY and JN, stage productions my son is involved in and productions that former JB cast members are starring in.

    “Oh what a musical”!
