Jersey Boys Has the Grit!

January 15th, 2008

Jersey Boys makes its Houston debut with the national touring company’s run at Hobby Center, today through February 9. Houston Chronicle’s Everett Evans spoke recently to JB director Des McAnuff about the genesis of Jersey Boys and how he became involved with the project. Here’s a preview:

I took this show on in spite of the fact that it was the kind of thing — a show based on a song catalog — that would not normally appeal to me.

My interest in doing it had everything to do with the four guys’ lives. They had such an extraordinary story — literally, bodies in trunks of cars, mob connections, corruption in the music industry. Two of the guys (Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi) did a total of 16 years (jail time) before the band hit! That’s including juvenile hall and all — but it’s a lot of time behind bars. Those were the things that jumped out at me.

  1. Well I read this article this am over coffee. Thin and didn’t tell ME anything new. It is refreshing to hear from Des McAnuff though, although I am sure that my fellow Texans missed the whole thing. Funny, I switched to the Beatles, etc after I defected from the Four Seasons too. I was a toddler then.

  2. I moved to TX from CA in August. I am too young to have been around when The Four Seasons were in their heyday. My mother took my daughter and I to see the play in CA and we loved it. My daugter is 15 and SHE loves it. I have been going to musicals since I was a little girl, and this is my favorite. Not only does it encompass music that is familiar to all ages, it has a great combination of story, pop-art sets and style of the past and present. I have seen the play 4 times and I have yet to see anyone come out of that play who did not like it. We have tickets for the show here, and my mom is in fact flying to Houston to see it with us.
