Jersey Boys Is Irresistible!

October 16th, 2007

DailySouthtown.com notes that it would be a terrific show if only for showcasing the greatest hits of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. But Jersey Boys, in its opening at the LaSalle Bank Theatre in Chicago, has even more than memorable music going for it. The rags-to-riches tale of this dazzling musical is irresistible.

Yet when it comes right down to it, the show soars because of its featured performers, who sound just like the singers they’re playing, and a band that has the Seasons’ original beat down pat. Jeremy Kushnier does a great job making DeVito sympathetic, even though the character’s enormous gambling debts to the mob almost sink the group. Michael Ingersoll brings humor and pathos to the role of Massi. And Drew Gehling is right on target as Gaudio, the easy-going thinker who brags that he’s responsible for the group’s success. But it is Jarrod Spector as the dazzling soprano-voiced Valli who captures the crooner to such startling effect that he brings down the house in show-stopping applause before the end of the first act.
