Jersey Boys Is Sensational In Schenectady!

March 8th, 2012

Bob Goepfert has posted a rave review of the JERSEY BOYS second national tour at Proctors. Check out an excerpt:

What is so alluring about the show is that it examines each man’s contribution to the whole. The show is told from four perspectives. They are not contradictory views and each adds insight and a personal feel to the whole.

Brandon Andrus plays Nick Massi — the guy who found fame by being surrounded by three people with more talent than himself. He even refers to himself as the “Ringo of The Seasons.” Andrus is excellent in creating a man whose aloofness somehow makes the other three more human.

Jason Kappus shows that songwriting genius Bob Gaudio was always the smartest guy in the room. The songs he wrote made the group, and he was the first to recognize their potential and their limitations. Kappus is able to show the man’s transition from innocent to deal-maker while always finding the integrity of the person.

Tommy DeVito formed the group and almost destroyed it. Without question, he is the most fascinating, complex and flawed member of the group. Thanks to a superior performance by Colby Foytik, he is never not likeable. In his own driven way, he’s charming.

The center of The Four Seasons is Frankie Valli. Brad Weinstock plays him as a nice guy who is more shaped by events than he is a person whose talent controls the destiny of the group. It’s a low-key, humanizing portrait of a man who “has greatness thrust upon him.”

There you have it — great music and four compelling performances that provide a night of memorable theater.
