Jersey Boys Says ‘Bye, Bye Baby’ to SF on Sunday!

September 28th, 2007

Theater Dogs blogger Chad Jones has posted a touching farewell to Jersey Boys at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco. Here’s a preview of what Jones has to say about the phenomenal hit musical that blew San Francisco audiences away since its opening last December:

It’s closing weekend for Jersey Boys, the show the Bay Area has come to love in a big way. I say that with confidence having heard from friends, co-workers, readers and total strangers about how much they enjoyed what is probably one of the most enjoyable musicals of the last 20 years.

I’ve seen the show four times since it opened last December. Family members came to town — they said it was to see me, but really they just wanted to see Jersey Boys – and friends I haven’t seen for far too long also decided to “suddenly” make the San Francisco trip.

Personally, I fell in love with the show about 20 minutes in, when it became clear that this was far from a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons jukebox musical. By the end of Act 1, I was smitten, and like so many other audience members who have been captured by the show, I felt suddenly like the world’s biggest Four Seasons fan.

  1. SF will be really quiet after this Sunday….. The songs of the Four Seasons will be silenced at the Curran for about one month until the new Las Vegas cast starts their limited run in November.

Lots of great performances inside the theatre, friendships made with cast members, a “backstage tour” going-away present from a cast member last week, a full cast signed playbill after attending many shows and lasting photo images taken at the Curran stage door…..

We’ll miss this cast so much, but am happy that San Francisco seems to be the starting point for the Jersey Boys tours, so the withdrawal will not be so difficult! I’m sure that the Chicago cast will do the “Windy City” very proud and will have their new fans coming back for more!

Good luck and best wishes to the Chicago cast of “Jersey Boys”! Travel safe and we hope to see you onstage again in the future!

  2. “Don’t Make Me Cry”!! I sat in the rush seats Wednesday night for the final time seeing this cast in SF. I was yelling and clapping after “Big Girls Don’t Cry” (hardly anyone claps after that one because of the segue into “Walk Like a Man”)and was astonished when Drew Gehling (Bob Gaudio) pointed a finger and me waving it and grinning at me, then proceeded on with his dialogue. I agree with you Mike, I will miss this cast so much and wish them all the best in Chicago.

  3. I’m so, so sad that the San Francisco JB cast is leaving town and heading for Chicago. They will leave a big void in the city. They really have a magic about them and I will especially miss Jarrod’s talent and charisma. Hoping to see more of him in the future. Wishing everyone great times in Chicago and sending big hugs from Fog City.

  4. I would love to see them one time this weekend. For you regulars out there, do you think it’s going to be hard getting rush tickets for a Saturday matinée?

  8. Last night was hands down the best performance I’ve seen. Chicago sure is lucky!

  9. Last night rocked. But so did today’s, plus the audience got little bonuses. A bit of free swag (JB metro card holders and a lottery scratcher) and first dibs on tickets for the new run.
