Original Jersey Boy Bob Gaudio Celebrates Toronto Anniversary!

August 25th, 2009

In honor of the production’s one-year anniversary at the Toronto Centre of the Arts, Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio was in town Thursday, Aug. 20 to take in a performance of the show he helped bring to Broadway four years ago in New York City. Reporter Fannie Sunshine has a terrific interview with original Jersey Boy Gaudio!

“I thought it was fabulous,” Gaudio said of the Toronto show. “These kids are fantastic and the actor who played me was relatively kind to me. There are 15, 16 of me worldwide and everyone has a slightly different twist (on portrayal). It’s surreal to see someone playing me, it’s a bit of life flashing before you. It’s a strange feeling.”

As for Jersey Boys, Gaudio and Valli began working on a stage musical based on the Four Seasons story in 2000 and in 2005, after premiering in San Diego, California in 2004, it had hit Broadway, winning a Tony Award for best musical.

“The show is so well written and staged,” said Gaudio, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Four Seasons in 1990. “The audience gets sucked in. One thing that stands out for me wherever I’ve seen the show is, 40 minutes in, the audience is living the Four Seasons’ lives with them. The Toronto show is a first-class production and it should not be much different to see if it was here or in New York or Chicago, except for different actors.”

As for Gaudio, he plans to take a much-needed break from work to spend time with family until the end of the year, adding a Jersey Boys movie might be coming to theatres down the road.

“My life has been Jersey Boys since conception,” he said.
