Last night, Joseph Leo Bwarie visited the East Saugus United Methodist Church to speak about his theatre career, starring as Frankie Valli in the JERSEY BOYS national tour company, and to provide advice about life in show business. Karen Chretien has a terrific recap of the event. Here’s a preview:

“Who here is interested in performing?” Bwarie asked the room, and approximately half of the individuals timidly raised their hands.

“Fair enough,” Bwarie said. “But when it comes to acting, your hand needs to be either way up, meaning yes I do (want to act), or it’s completely down, saying no I don’t.”

Bottom line, Bwarie advised, is that acting is a tough industry to succeed in but, if you want it bad enough, you can get anywhere.

Networking, Bwarie adds, is a significant factor in succeeding in the acting industry.
“I always thought I could defy the saying, ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,’” said Bwarie. “Unfortunately, the saying is very true. If you know someone who knows someone who knows the lady that does laundry for Spielberg — call them. You need the network to get in the door and the talent to prove that you belong there.”
