Today in Four Seasons’ History

September 15th, 2009

On September 15, 1962, the whole world exploded! Forty-seven years ago today, “Sherry” by The Four Seasons hit Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Chart and remained in the top spot for five consecutive weeks! Written by Bob Gaudio, the song that started it all for The Four Seasons, stayed on the chart for 14 weeks.

“Sherry” is my first musical memory as a kid–no song came before that one for me! In fact, when nobody was looking, I tore a little piece of the label off, so I could distinguish my favorite 45 from all the others in my brother’s collection. What about the first time you heard “Sherry”?

  1. When Sherry came out I was in High School and in my Home Room class was a girl I was desperatly in love with….Sherry.
The song was an instant hit and today still brings back those wonderful and vivid memories.

  2. The first time I heard “Sherry” it was almost unearthly. Who is this? Are they girls? Is it a black group? The harmonies were so different. Strong, strong falsetto. Great shuffle beat.

I mean, compared to the other top songs at the time (Sheila, Locomotion, Roses Are Red etc.)it was so different.

OK, great song, great sound…would we hear from this group again??? Then came “Big Girls” which was even bolder and tighter. The formula was established and I’ve been hooked ever since.
