Video Flashback: Lady Marmalade by LaBelle & Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya, & Pink #BobCreweDay
September 12th, 2014Bob Crewe’s hitmaking streak continued for so many decades. In 1974, with Kenny Nolan, he wrote “Lady Marmalade.” Recorded by Labelle, this song became notorious for its sexually provocative, New Orleans-inflected chorus, “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ce soir?” and became a radio and dance club sensation. Labelle peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March, 1975. (The following week, the songwriting duo had another song top the charts–Frankie Valli’s “My Eyes Adored You”!)
“Lady Marmalade” was re-recorded by Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mýa, and Pink for the soundtrack of the 2001 film Moulin Rouge!, and this version remained at the #1 position in the U.S. for five weeks. It repeated the same chart position in the United Kingdom and Australia. Rolling Stone ranked “Lady Marmalade” as the 479th greatest song of all time.
