Baltimore Adores ‘The Boys’!

February 13th, 2011

Baltimore critics keep raving about the JERSEY BOYS national tour production that is running through Feb. 27 at the Hippodrome Theatre.

Check out the preview of Mike Giuliano’s fantastic review:

But the book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice is so smartly crafted to blend music and melodrama that it ensures “Jersey Boys” will play well in states other than New Jersey.

Narrating the story of his life through spoken words as much as song, the actor impersonating Frankie Valli, Joseph Leo Bwarie, is a diminutive dynamo who commands that minimalist set. When he’s completely the center of attention in such numbers as “My Eyes Adored You” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” you won’t be able to take your eyes off of him.

In a lesser show, the other members of the group might be bland and nearly anonymous. “Jersey Boys,” fortunately, provides fully realized characterizations for Nick Massi (Steve Gouveia), Tommy DeVito (Matt Bailey) and Bob Gaudio (Quinn VanAntwerp). This gives dramatic heft to the show when the chart-topping pop group threatens to implode owing to long-simmering disputes.
