Blogger Karen M. Peterson has posted an “Awards Profile” about the upcoming JERSEY BOYS film on AwardsCircuit.com. She shares her thoughts on why (and perhaps why not) the movie will succeed. Ms. Patterson also speculates about the award nominations the JB movie might garner in 2015:

Why it could succeed:
The ultra-popular Broadway play won the 2006 Tony Award for Best Musical, as well as Best Leading Actor in a Musical for star John Lloyd Young. In addition to its Broadway run and national tours, which regularly sell out, Jersey Boys has enjoyed extended runs in London, Vegas, and Malaysia. Audiences love the play, which will likely translate into a nice box office when the film is released in June.

With director Clint Eastwood and two surviving members of the original band as producers, this film is likely to be well-constructed and highly entertaining, while also offering some real opportunities for the cast to shine. Eastwood has a penchant for directing very character-driven stories, with successful films like Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby. He allows the stories to play out at their own pace, giving the actors a chance to grow into their roles, a skill that could be very useful in a story about four boys from Jersey growing into their own roles as celebrities.

Besides, Jersey Boys is a musical and musicals tend to do well with audiences. This could be one of the hits of the summer.

Why it might not succeed:
It’s a musical, and musicals could go either way. While they tend to do well with audiences, they don’t always translate box office success into awards success. Of course, there are notable exceptions like Chicago and Les Misérables, but for every success, there’s a Phantom of the Opera that didn’t make it.

Also important to consider is the recent filmography of Clint Eastwood, who hasn’t had a truly successful project since 2006?s sister films Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. In the past couple of years, he seems to have lost a little bit of that touch that made him stand out as a director. There is also the fact that he’s never done a musical before and it could all fall apart under his direction.

Awards Speculation:
Best Picture
Best Director
Lead Actor–John Lloyd Young
Supporting Actor–Christopher Walken
Production Design

So, what do you think? Will the JERSEY BOYS movie be a big box office hit this summer? Why or why not?
