Friday Flashback: Sonny & Cher’s Rendition of Can’t Take My Eyes Off You!

July 15th, 2011

The song that almost never saw the light of day for Frankie Valli, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” ended up selling three million copies and peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in the summer of 1967.

The song has been covered by some 200 artists over the years, in many countries, being released sometimes under its original title “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and sometimes with an expanded title, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.” A few notable artists who have covered CTMEOY include: Andy Williams, The Lettermen, Nancy Wilson, The Pet Shop Boys, Lauren Hill, and Barry Manilow.

Discovering Sonny & Cher’s rendition was a recent fun find on YouTube for me. Does anyone know the details of when this performance originally aired? Was it on their own show, or maybe the Mike Douglas Show?

  1. Looks like a “Playboy After Dark” set to me.

  2. If it sold over 3 million copies, they should get Platinum certification, even now. Motown has gone back in the catalog and received certifications from way back in the 1960s.

Here’s another famous and unusual cover from 1967, by Annifrid Lyngstad, before ABBA. It’s in Swedish.
