Jersey Boys: A Top-Notch Production!

October 3rd, 2007

Kerry Lengel of The Arizona Republic states that Jersey Boys strikes all the right notes! It certainly makes the most of its Sopranos atmosphere, with its tough-guy accents and plentiful F-bombs, even though the local Mafia don owes more to Marlon Brando than James Gandolfini. Mostly, though, Jersey Boys soars on the power of personality.

Everything about the production is top-notch, including the deft use of video screens flashing retro-style comic-book panels or black-and-white video for re-created Ed Sullivan spots. But it also really helps that, unlike the Beatles, the story of the Four Seasons isn’t well known, which highlights the contrast between the innocence of the songs and the sex, drugs and gambling debts backstage.
