‘Real Man’s Musical’ Jersey Boys Heads to Columbus Aug. 17-Sept 4!

August 11th, 2011

Richard Ades of The Other Paper has a fantastic preview to the JERSEY BOYS national tour production that is headed to Columbus at the Ohio Theatre beginning next Wednesday with some reflections from Matt Bailey, who plays the role of Tommy DeVito. Here’s a sneak peek:

Jersey Boys: The Story of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons begins a three-week run at the Ohio Theatre on Wednesday. If the musical’s reputation is accurate, that means scores of local men will soon find themselves tapping their feet, blinking away tears and making plans to see the show a second or third time.

Matt Bailey, who plays former Four Seasons member Tommy DeVito in the musical biography of the vintage pop group, said it’s bound to happen.

“We see these guys in the audience who have obviously been dragged to the show with their girlfriends and wives,” he said, speaking on the phone from a tour stop in Milwaukee. “And by the end of the show, they’re the ones standing up and screaming…and wanting to come back and bring their friends.”

Just what is it about the Tony-winning show that breaks down the average male’s defenses against all things Broadway musical-related? Bailey said it’s the tale’s focus on the challenges faced by the four buddies who make up the quartet.

“These guys get close in the show, and they stand up for each other,” he said. “They get into fights, but at the end of the day they’re always there for each other.”

“I think that everyone can relate in one way or another to someone in the show.”
