Jersey Boys Wins Drama League’s 2006 Distinguished Production of a Musical Award!
The Drama League was founded in 1916 as an association of theatre professionals and patrons dedicated to encouraging the finest in professional theatre and has since then developed into the theatre’s premiere service organization. The Drama League Awards are the oldest theatrical honors in America, beginning in 1935 and predating the Tony Awards by twelve years. These highly-prized awards are also the only major awards given by theatregoers themselves; they are chosen each year by the thousands of Drama League members nationwide.
Christian Hoff, Daniel Reichard, J. Robert Spencer, and John Lloyd young will be among the luminaries who will be serving as honorary co-chairs at the Drama League Awards Ceremony and Luncheon. Alan Cumming, who is currently in previews for the revival of The Threepenny Opera, will host the annual luncheon, which begins at Noon on May 5, 2005 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square.

In 1954, the Drama Desk was founded to explore key issues of the theatre community. Each year, the organization produces a series of panel discussions to spotlights areas of concern and then to educate the public about these matters. Guest panelists have included theatre reporters, editors, and critics and every Mayor (or a representative) since the panels’ inception.
At the time of the Drama Desk’s founding, the only major awards honoring New York theatre’s creative men and women were Tony awards, which only celebrated those productions produced in Broadway theatres, while ignoring the hundreds of stage productions presented each year Off-Broadway, Off-Off-Broadway, and in legitimate not-for-profit theatres. Since Drama Desk members all New York theatre productions, the organization decided in 1955 to create its own awards celebrating creative stage achievements wherever they were presented.
The Drama Desk Awards will be held Sunday, May 21, 2006 at 9PM at the LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center. The ceremony will be taped and subsequently broadcast nationwide on PBS stations, and for the fourth consecutive year, the awards ceremony will be webcast by TheaterMania.com.

The American Theatre Wing’s Tony Awards® got their start in 1947 when the Wing established an awards program to celebrate excellence in the theatre.
Named for Antoinette Perry, an actress, director, producer, and the dynamic wartime leader of the American Theatre Wing who had recently passed away, the Tony Awards made their official debut at a dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria hotel on Easter Sunday, April 6, 1947. Vera Allen, Perry’s successor as chairwoman of the Wing, presided over an evening that included dining, dancing, and a program of entertainment. The dress code was black tie optional, and the performers who took to the stage included Mickey Rooney, Herb Shriner, Ethel Waters, and David Wayne. Eleven Tonys were presented in seven categories, and there were eight special awards, including one for Vincent Sardi, proprietor of the eponymous eatery on West 44th Street. Big winners that night included José Ferrer, Arthur Miller, Helen Hayes, Ingrid Bergman, Patricia Neal, Elia Kazan and Agnes de Mille.
The 60th Annual Tony Awards ceremony will be telecast from 8:00-11:00PM on CBS from Radio City Music Hall.
