The Four Seeasons did a stage song called “How Do You Make a Hit Song” (it is available on the “Live” Vee Jay album) – it is a song about how “Sherry” became a hit record. There are some lines in that stage song that are applicable to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” and many other Bob Gaudio tunes as well. In summary, Bob says the reason the song was a hit was because of Frankie’s voice to which Frankie humbly replies, at least at first, no it was the melody. Frankie later recants and says “It was the singer, not the melody” At least in this TV commercial, melody wins the day. The “CTMEOY” melody is really unmistakable. What a great commercial.
