Preview of Colby Foytik’s Interview with DelcoTimes.com

December 4th, 2011

Neal Zoren has a marvelous interview with Colby Foytik, who will be playing Tommy DeVito in JERSEY BOYS second national tour. Below is a sneak peek:

Besides being able to settle into one place, Colby Foytik says a great part of spending 11 months in the Las Vegas production of “Jersey Boys” is he got to play in front of two of the original Four Seasons, Frankie Valli and Tommy DeVito.

At the time, Foytik was playing Hank Majewski, a member of one the groups that preceded The Four Seasons. For the tour that launches Tuesday at Philadelphia’s Forrest Theatre, Foytik graduates to DeVito, one of the more colorful characters in the 2006 Tony-winning musical and a part that earned its originator, Christian Hoff, a Tony of his own.

“It’s interesting playing people who are real,” says Foytik by telephone from Philadelphia, where “Jersey Boys” had been in rehearsal for a week.

“I met Tommy DeVito at a holiday party. At the time, I did not know I would be playing him, although I was the understudy for the part.

“Meeting him does not affect the way I play him because he is now 83 and not at all like the character in the show. I listened to the way he talked, but other than that, the Tommy I met would not be the Tommy I am portraying. I think everyone in the cast is careful not to mimic but to create a character based on the text in the script.”
