Jersey Boys’ Hoff, Reichard, Spencer & Young– Stars in the Making!

November 27th, 2005

According to many critics, the four actors playing the original Four Seasons in Jersey Boys on Broadway are “stars in the making”. Here’s a sampling of what they’ve said:

Christian Hoff (Tommy DeVito)
Curtainup.com said Hoff makes his irresponsible DeVito simultaneously charming and irritating…

Newsday stated that Christian Hoff plays him with such sweet grandiosity that, really, it is hard to process the impact of his irresponsibility.

Daniel Reichard (Bob Gaudio)
The Toronto Star noted that Daniel Reichard scores as the cheerfully guileless Bob Gaudio, who wrote most of their hit tunes.

…But Reichard’s performance is perhaps most notable for the focused intensity that appears to drive Gaudio to success, according to Curtainup.com…

J. Robert Spencer (Nick Massi)
Newsday said J. Robert Spencer brings an outsider dignity to Nick Massi, who feels like “the Ringo” of the group.

While Curtainup.com applauds Spencer’s poignantly revealing performance as the most conflicted regarding his loyalty to the bossy DeVito.

John Lloyd Young (Frankie Valli)
New York Times critic Brantley raves:”The chief source of fresh air…is MR. YOUNG, who mutates from hopeful teenaged schlemiel to regretful fallen idol with a spontaneity that never fades. When this Frankie Valli sings, you sense him channeling all the messy, happy, angry feelings of his life without straying from the required official voice. ”

Curtainup.com declares that…much of this is due to YOUNG, so commanding a presence that it’s hard to believe he’s making his Broadway debut…his good-natured spunk and slowly shattered innocence make him a thoroughly charming, likeable presence from the get-go…

Bios on these four new stars will be posted soon to JerseyBoysBlog.com

  1. Isn’t it amazing that, a year and a half later, how these descriptions still apply? The difference, though, is that our four actors are no longer “stars in the making”…the “in the making” modifier can now be dropped!!
