Patriot Ledger Critic Says Jersey Boys Hits All the High Notes in Boston!

ven if you are a big music fan, all you might know about the Four Seasons is that Frankie Valli was their lead singer and they had a slew of hits (“Sherry,†“Big Girls Don’t Cry†and “Walk Like a Man,†to name a few) many years ago. But, if you head to the Colonial Theatre in Boston to see “Jersey Boys,†the electrifying Tony Award-winning musical based on their bumpy ride to the top, you might start thinking you witnessed every hit and heartbreak.In the superbly crafted story (kudos to director Des McAnuff and the entire creative team), each of the four original members – Tommy DeVito (Matt Bailey), Bob Gaudio (Quinn Van Antwerp), Nick Massi (Steve Gouveia) and Frankie Valli (Joseph Leo Bwarie) – take turns telling us their side of the story. The technique allows us to get to know each man individually. DeVito, the band’s original manager and lead guitarist, is charismatic, but also jealous, shady and egotistical.
Gaudio, the keyboard player/guitarist and songwriter, is talented, driven and professional; Massi, the bass player who is also a talented vocal arranger, is quirky and funny, but lacks drive and self-confidence; Valli, although immature at first, comes of age personally and professionally. There is no denying the unique quality of his expressive falsetto singing or his singular ability to become a star and eventually front the group.
