Another Tony Recap

June 18th, 2006

Post and Courier reporter Dottie Ashley said she has always wanted to attend the Tony Awards, but has never had the opportunity. Last Sunday night, she settled for sitting in front of the television for the 2006 ceremony that aired on CBS from Radio City Music Hall.

Ashley and her husband applauded wildly when Jersey Boys won for Best Musical and John Lloyd Young received the Tony for Leading Actor in a Musical. Young and one of his co-stars, Christian Hoff, who won for Supporting Actor in a Musical, emotionally thanked their fathers.

Jersey Boys had been running only a few weeks when Ashley and her husband saw it on Christmas night. But she suspected it might be a winner because in all of her years of attending Broadway musicals, she had rarely seen people nearly jump off the balcony as they did when the all-male group based on Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons belted out “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.”

Appropriately, Valli, himself, beaming broadly, was present for the awards ceremony.
