Beggin’ Is Ubiquitous!

July 27th, 2008

Within the last year, the 1967 Four Seasons’ hit “Beggin’” (written by Bob Gaudio and Peggy Farina and peaking at #16 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart) has been, well, ubiquitous! First, there was the Pilooski re-edit that hit the London charts, then–the Norwegian rap group Madcon’s rap version of “Beggin’” was a chart-topper for five weeks in Norway!

Now, my current favorite TV show, “Mad Men” features “Beggin’” in a promo ad for Season 2 that begins tonight on AMC!

  1. “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” on December 31, 2006, of course, also had the Jersey Boys singing “Beggin’”.

I was also a little confused as to the setting of the “Mad Men” show in 1961 (Jackie Kennedy on TV and “Let’s Twist Again” defined the time), while “Beggin’” in the promo was from 1967. It would have been nice if they had the whole song in the episode, but it doesn’t quite fit the time setting.

The December 31, 2007 “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” featured another New Jersey Band, The Jonas Brothers, who, if you’ve attended any Graduation Parties this year, are the latest craze. Interestingly, two of the brothers are NICK and JOE! So, you can tell your kids (or grandkids) that there was another New Jersey Band when you grew up where a JOE replaced a NICK!
