Buck Hujabre’s Reflections As a Jersey Boy!

September 21st, 2011

Cathy Nelson Price has a fabulous feature with JERSEY BOYS national tour swing cast member Buck Hujabre. Check out this preview:

Life on the road, a young family he’d do anything to stay close to, and earning his living as a singer-musician-actor — he may be an ex-LSU Tiger, but at heart as well as onstage, actor Buck Hujabre is a Jersey Boy.

Baton Rouge-born Hujabre plays several roles in the national tour of “Jersey Boys” that stops at the Wharton Center in East Lansing, Sept. 28-Oct. 16. The award-winning musical story of singers Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, with a score by Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe, has proved to be one of the more durable jukebox bio-musical revues, garnering Tony and Grammy Awards in 2005 and the Olivier Award in 2008.

“The story of having it all, then losing it all, is the morality play of every extraordinary success,” said Hujabre, talking between shows from Omaha, where the “Jersey Boys” tour is playing prior to its Michigan stop. “But what really resonates with me is that ‘Jersey Boys’ is about family; the family onstage, the ones they form and lose offstage, and how family means everything to them.

“My wife and 2 year-old son are on the road with me full-time, so my child has two stay-at-home parents. I really do get to have it all, and I know I’m doing something most people only dream of doing.”

Though the music rocks, “Jersey Boys” is bittersweet, chronicling the group’s discovery in 1960, stratospheric success, brushes with the law, loves and losses. Fronted by falsetto-king Frankie Valli, the group scored big with hits like “Let’s Hang On,” “Sherrie,” “Dawn,” and “Walk Like a Man.” Hujabre, who was a toddler when the group last had a chartable hit, finds powerful juxtaposition between the score’s mostly upbeat tempos, and its darker lyrics.

“Listen to the lyrics of ‘Dawn’ against the happy voices and orchestration,” Hujabre offered. “‘Dawn, Go away, I’m no good for you…Stay with him, he’ll be good to you.’ It’s heartbreaking. It’s also genius.”

Buck is one of my all time favorites among the “Jersey Boys” casts. I have gotten to meet him often at the stage doors and he has always responded to my e-mails. He is charming and so talented. I sure hope to see him in JB or another endeavor in the future. Much love to you Buck!

  2. Buck was my favorite cast member playing Bob Gaudio on November 14, 2012 at the Paris Las Vegas! I was up front and had a magnificent view. He stole the show!! I loved his performance and the whole show was fantastic! Best part of my Vegas trip. Wish I could have met him and some of the other cast members.
