Catching Up With Tony Winner John Lloyd Young!

John Lloyd Young

Greg Hernandez of GregInHollywood.com says that it was a pity that he never got around to seeing the Broadway smash Jersey Boys when it had a run in LA. But last night at the inConcert musical celebration benefiting Project Angel Food, he had the opportunity to watch John Lloyd Young, the Tony Award-winning star of the Broadway production, belt out a couple of numbers that were a real highlight.

John, who played Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys, sang “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” as well as “Being Alive” from Company. He is the first American male to ever win the best lead actor in a musical Tony for his Broadway debut.

Hernandez met John before the show and spokw with him about his recent guest-stint on Glee and about his leading role in the upcoming indie feature Oy Vey My Son is Gay! Here’s what JLY had to say:

On Glee: I played the thumbless, cough medicine addicted wood shop teacher. It was amazing. We shot it back in March and waited six months to see it and it was very exciting to see it – especially with all the fanfare leading up to it. It’s an amazing show and written so irreverently and I luxuriating in muy role because it was so quirky and offbeat. Right now, my character is in rehab and they left it open [for a possible return]. They just picked up for a full 22-episode season so we’ll see, maybe I’ll get my act together in rehab and come back.

On Oy Vey! My Son is Gay!: I play Lainie Kazan’s perfect Jewish son except for one little thing. It’s got Carmen Electra, Bruce Vilanch, Jai Rodriguez, Saul Rubinek, Vince Pastore. It’s a great cast and a really warm family comedy about parents coming to terms with their gay son. It’s a comedy of errors.

“It’s Lainie Kazan so it’s extremely subtle,” he joked. “It was amazing to work with Lainie. She’s got great stories. We’re both singers and both started on Broadway so we have a lot in common. We love each other. We were like mother and son on set.”

A benefit premiere of the film takes place Oct. 22 at the Vista Theater on Sunset and benefits AIDS Porject Los Angeles. Tickets can be purchased at APLA.org.
