Photo by Aubrey Reuben reports that yesterday’s preview matinee of Roundabout Theatre Company’s Pal Joey at Broadway’s Studio 54 was canceled due to a foot injury sustained by star Christian Hoff, who plays the title character. Understudy Matthew Risch was prepped to go into the evening performance Saturday night and was also expected to play today, while Hoff recovers.

“Due to a minor foot injury sustained during last night’s (Friday) performance, Christian Hoff has been advised by his doctor to rest through the weekend,” according to a statement released late on Nov. 22. “We hope he will be back early next week.”

We wish Christian a speedy recovery!

  1. Sorry to hear this. I’m glad that Christian was in such fine form, though, on Thursday night when we had the pleasure of seeing him onstage and dancing up a storm!

  4. Dear Christian:
Sorry to hear of your injury and wish you a speedy recovery. You were terrific last Sunday when Sid and I saw you and as always warm and cordial to us. sentiments.

If your family is there the next time I am at the show I would love to meet them. Hope Elizabeth liked the musical jewelry box. As an experienced Mom of three girls, I know most little girls, as well as big girls love jewelry and music. I also have a granddaughter, named Molly, who is seven and already performed on two c.d.’s one for Macy’s and one for Noggin. She has an agent and seems to love performing and is perfectly at ease in front of a camera or an audience. Her mother, Eileen, and as a matter of fact myself as well, were involved in special drama groups in school and performed in summer stock as well as the 92nd Street Y productions.

I am an eternal optimist and are certain you will heal quickly and we will see you Sunday, December 21st when we have tickets for that performance (matinee). I will probably bring my daughter, Eileen, with me and stop by to say hello.

The fans of Jersey Boys, Charly (Charlotte) and Vanessa were waiting to say hello to you last Sunday as well. I recognized them from John’s my space. They were amazed that I was able to make that connection. I took pictures of them too and told them they were even prettier than their pictures which I sincerely meant. I’ll bring the pictures we took with you, as well as the girls’ pictures on December 21st.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Get a good rest.

  5. Sunday, Nov 30th was a rainy, cold, windy day in the city. It was Thanksgiving weekend..and tons of people were in the city. BUT none of that mattered. My husband & I had tickets to Pal Joey…excited to see Christian Hoff as the lead. We had seen Christian 4 times in Jersey Boys, and he was awesome. I remember standing in a line, glad to be out of the rain, and telling my husband that it would be awful if Christian were not in the show today. We had almost reached the door, and sure enough saw the sign stating that a stand in would be there in place of Christian Hoff. NO! This can’t be happening! Came from Jersey in all the traffic, soaked from top to bottom, and then NO Christian Hoff! We went straight to the window and were told Christian hurt his foot, and would not return to the show. Without a fight, a full refund was given and back out in the rain we went…We wish you a speedy recovery and we hope to see you on Broadway again in the near future! You are incredibly talented!
Happy Holidays to you and your family!
