Daniel Robert Sullivan’s Places Please Update: Special Book Signing Tomorrow in Toronto & Preview of His BWW Interview!

July 23rd, 2012

Daniel Robert Sullivan Places Please

As reported earlier, former JERSEY BOYS Toronto’s “Tommy DeVito”–Daniel Robert Sullivan has written a wonderful book that details his journey in JERSEY BOYS that is called Places, Please!

Tomorrow, July 25, there will be a special book signing event at the Toronto Centre for the Arts following performance of Dancap’s Million Dollar Quartet.

BroadwayWorld.com’s Kelly Cameron has a marvelous interview with Dan about his exciting memoir! Here’s a preview: Why choose Toronto to come and launch your book?

This is where I got my start! I spent a great deal of time at The Toronto Centre for the Arts performing in Jersey Boys, and I’m thrilled to get to come back. Dancap and Aubrey Dan were very generous to me on a personal level, and I’m glad to be able to return to where it all started.

I will be doing a meet and greet and signing copies of my book after the performance of Million Dollar Quartet on July 25th 2012. I think it will be a great way for me to meet some of my fans, but also hope it will help spread the word and connect the Jersey Boys phenomenon with Million Dollar Quartet. After all, the audience for one would likely enjoy the other. I will also be appearing on Canada AM on the 24th of July to do an interview and talk about Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio stories.

Could you give us a brief overview of the book?

It’s an extremely detailed account of what it’s like to become a part of a mega musical. I wanted it to be very detailed as a way to both inspire young people who are interested in this genre and also realistically portray what life is like for the very average actor. I read a lot of books when I was a young actor, but none of them were quite long enough or detailed enough to really tell someone what this process is like day by day. That’s what I wanted to do.

  1. Dan, you ought to be so proud of “Places, Please: Becoming a Jersey Boy.” It’s not only valuable for those in showbiz, but for all of us as a guide to life in general. I love the way you focus on auditioning as well as your craft itself, often with funny and poignant anecdotes. I admire your not being afraid to address your mistakes as well as your successes. You dive deeply into your conversations with your auditioners and mentors. You’ve even told me how to go about finding an apartment in Toronto.

Move over, Mama Rose: your guidance and efforts when it comes to persistence is mind-boggling. Sometimes I wish I had put forth that effort in my earlier business interviews for those finance jobs. Who knows what it might have led to?

But what I’m really eager to hear more about is your time as a telephone psychic when you had some downtime in NYC–waiting for my answer from Doris Day for over 50 years as to “Will I be happy? Will I be rich?” And now I know that you were the one who took all my quarters between those subway stops!

I was also there the very last night in Toronto and your documentation (literally by the minute) and the ten-minute standing ovation took me back to one of the most wonderful days in my life. And yes, I was one of the interlopers that disrupted your last dinner, but I did end up with a picture I’ll treasure forever.

Dan, you’ve written a masterpiece and a bible for all of us–not only for young actors like yourself but for aging baby-boomer accountants like myself. Now, if you could only teach me to lower my speaking voice a few octaves to sound like Quinn Van Antwerp so I at least sound authoritative to my colleagues!!
