  1. This show was fantastic — and it appeared that everyone in the audience shouted “yes” when Frankie asked who has seen “Jersey Boys.” The audience received a special treat when Frankie and the band returned after the “end” to re-d0 the three closing songs.

Catch it if you can — there are some one hour versions appearing on cable. Check out http://www.frankievallifourseasons.com/ for details on the other showings and the set list.

  4. I contacted every friend and relative I knew to tell them to watch this show. They know I’m a huge Four Seasons fan and Opus 17 is my favorite song. I’ve only received about 20 calls in the last hour asking me “Where’s Opus 17?” They cut it!! It was the only song cut from the song list. :-( (((

  6. Absolutely fantastic!! Even more special after having seen Jersey Boys. I am online now trying to find where to buy a copy! Brian Boitano is amazing, as always!

  7. Saw this performance (sans the ice skating) when Frankie appeared with the Houston Symphony. It was wonderful to see and hear him again. Was also nice to get a closer look at the new Four Seasons. Frankie and his “kids” were fantastic and brought back terrific memories of his show and the “Jersey Boys”. I think the skating was fantastic and it looked like they really enjoyed skating to this music. I just wish the ending hadn’t ended so abruptly. Would have been nice to see the ovation at the end. However, Thanks to NBC for brining this to us and to Frankie Valli for opening his life to all of us.

  11. Hi Susie & Dale…I have the actual Sears Arena Program obtained from the Dissonskating Tech-Half’s last Saturday which includes the names of the skaters, who skated to which songs including minutes. How can I get this to you guys?

    Comment by NewJerseyLasagna — November 2, 2008 @ 6:41 pm

  12. I watched the first half and put the rest on the DVR as we went out to dinner. It stirred had a lively discussion of the popular music of both today and yesterday at Applebees- we discussed everybody from Gerry Goffin, the Angels, and such to Avril Lavigne! I’ll watch the rest later.

  17. Flipping through channels today I came across ice skating. Could not believe Frankie Valle was performing. It bought me back to the 60′s. He was great. Who were the other performers, and the band. Is there a CD I can purchase of today’s music I can purchase. I absolutely loved the music arrangement.

  23. I had no idea that this show was being aired today. Had not seen any advertisments about it. I was flipping channels and came across this program. I loved Jersey Boys (the Broadway Show) and have always loved Frankie Valli. I hope this show will be aired again so I can see the entire program. I also would purchase a dvd if one was available.

  25. The show was GREAT. Will you make a CD available?

    Comment by Robert Kronstein — November 3, 2008 @ 8:04 am

  26. hi guys. Some of you are like me, totally missed the program. Well I did get to see the last 15 minutes or so but now I am banging my head against the desk wondering how I can get to see the entire program. I am like everyone else, more than willing to pay for this. It would really be great to petition NBC for a repeat performance but again, how do we do that?
Any help or suggestions other than “how could you be so stupid? ” are appreciated. From what I did get to see it was as polished as any of the shows with Frankie Valli & the Seasons and Frankie sounded in great voice. Wonderful to see all the praise he has so deserved over the years.

  28. I have loved the Four Seasons since I was an early teen at their inception. I now am a pianist and was on my way to play at a Wedding cocktail hour. I played two of my favorites there; Save it For Me and Tell it to the Rain and the emotion and passion in my music really showed through. I was so surprised that the selection of music was so thorough. HOW CAN I SEE IT AGAIN….Does anyone have a DVD I can buy?

    Comment by John Rotante — November 3, 2008 @ 9:48 am

  29. I want a copy of the show!! I caught the last half and LOVED the music. the skating was nice but the singing was amazing. The back up singers were YUMMY too!!

  31. I was SO upset to find out that I missed this! I didn’t know about it until Sunday night after my mother RAVED to me about watching it.

Will it re-air? Anyone have a copy to share/sell???

    Comment by AFAN — November 3, 2008 @ 11:28 am

  32. I happened on the program much as everyone else did! Flipping channels. I missed the first 10 minutes of it. I started recording it immediately and have played it over and over! The 4 Seasons & Frankie Valli have allways been one of my very favorite groups. They were wonderful and the skater were absolutely superb!!! They added so much fun to the show. A lot of people I know missed it and are sick!! Is there a chance it will air again? PLEASE!!!!

    Comment by Dottie Marsh — November 3, 2008 @ 2:08 pm

  33. I’ve posted the other planned airings under the YouTube sample. But they will be one hour versions. My edit (rough) of the show without commercials is 1:20.

There’s a link to who the skates were, etc. on the Frankie Valli site — see earlier post for the link.

Don’t know how many “shares” I can do — but let me know — I’ll try. I know that OPUS 17 was cut — one (but there are all) of my favorites. If I remember correctly, it also had one of the better skating performances.

  35. To everybody out there crying and kicking themselves that they missed the Tribue on Ice show, go to this web site>>> http://www.gilgweb.com/home.html

Click on the Tribute On Ice videos. You can see everything you missed.

Unfortunately, NBC cut Opus 17, so I can’t enjoy what I was looking forward to seeing on this show. I’m looking for a video of Frankie singing it. Several people who attended the show said he sang it, but the 5 minute Smuckers commercials and the 10 minutes of sports updates took it away. :-( (

  37. Caught the show flipping channels also, 1 minute before it aired! What a blast watching Frankie Valli sing the familiar songs (some w/different lyrics) from JB (and my youth) and I was moved to get up and dance, joyfully, to Sherry Baby in my living room. If NBC gets enough requests they will likely air it again.

    Comment by Zanna — November 4, 2008 @ 2:21 pm

  38. Responding to the question about the guys with Frankie at the Tribute on Ice. The horn section was local I suspect — it has been at the other Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons shows I’ve seen in the last year — the Tribute on Ice was my fifth since October of last year. The guitar player and keyboard player, for sure, have been touring with Frankie as well. I think the same is true for the drummer but I’m not as sure of that.

The Four Seasons are, I think, at least 3 out of 4 the same for the last year. They are usually introduced and have some nice interactions with the audience — but none of that happened at the Tribute on Ice because of the TV filming.

And on the future broadcasts, I suspect there will still be commercials but even if there aren’t — my roughly edited DVD runs 1:20 so there are still going to be cuts.

  39. Oh my gosh! This show was FANTASTIC!

I am so sad that I only caught bits of the 2nd hour.

Like many of you, I hope this goes on DVD one of these days because I would love to have it for my DVD collection.

Frankie Valli was great and his Four Seasons were pretty attractive, too–almost as good as those adorable Jersey Boys on Broadway/tour!

I hope NBC or cable repeats the entire show.

Someone please let us know if you find out.

    Comment by Dina F. — November 4, 2008 @ 4:47 pm

  40. Wow, thank you to Frank and the GILG website for making ALL those songs from the Tribute on Ice available!!

I also noticed that the Tech Half has four youtube posts where you can see it a bit larger.

Thank goodness, because although I should have known from JB Blog and Forum posts, I forgot; and like so many people happened upon the channel when it was well into the show.

I’ll be watching for it on other stations, as noted in comments #9 & 14, under the “Tell It To The Rain’ youtube post/ article here on the Blog.

  41. This is in response to Post #4 by Tom and a question for him. As Tom is our resident expert on “Opus 17″, is the Wikipedia article on Mr. Cifelli correct that Mike Petrillo (cowriter with Mr. Cifelli on “Tell It To The Rain”) played the saxophone solo break in that song? And it says it’s tenor sax, but it sounds more like a baritone sax to me, though there is some overlap of the tonal ranges. And is Mike Petrillo also the saxophonist in “Can’t Get Enough Of You Baby”?

    Comment by Ted Hammond — November 5, 2008 @ 1:23 pm

  42. To Ted–

I’ve honestly been trying for years to find out who played the sax on Opus 17. That’s the best part of the song!!

The guy who would know that would be Denny Randell. You might try asking him on DennyRandell.com.

Mike Petrillo was the tall balding fellow who was pictured with Frankie and Tommy DeVito when Frankie was awarded the Italian Man of the Year award a few years ago. Apparently, they’re still good friends.

In the 30 years of Frankie’s concerts, I did see Opus 17 performed–ONCE!! It happened to be the concert that I had front row seats, and Frankie was standing about 5 feet in front of me while I was having my massive stroke and cardiac arrest for 2 minutes and 33 seconds of heaven–LOL!!! The saxophone solo stood out prominently, too!!

  43. The show was great, I would like to purchase the DVD video. Please let me know if the DVD is available.

    Comment by Frank Marotta — November 6, 2008 @ 9:03 am

  44. Tom, I’ve listened to “Opus 17″ again, and there seems to be both a tenor sax and a baritone sax in “Opus 17″, and the solo does seem to be a tenor sax. I guess Mike Petrillo could have recorded both tracks, but my experience is that different register instrument players tend to specialize in one register, wheteher it is bass clarinet, piccolo, or cello. With wind instrments, it has to do with differing embrasure requirements.

    Comment by Ted Hammond — November 6, 2008 @ 9:43 am

  45. I’m not a musician but I’ve always enjoyed the heavy orchestration of Four Seasons songs. They use heavy brass, heavy piano, and heavy drums. You’re right that there could be two different saxophones used in Opus 17. It opens with a saxophone lead. Then at the line I’ll be blue (baby blue), you hear the sax. I’ve always loved how the music stops with the three taps on the piano right after “I’ll be strong, I’ll try to carry on”. It’s Bob Gaudio’s signature in the song. The sax was used heavily in Opus 17 but the trombone was used in Working My Way Back to You. Listen very carefully at the end of WMWBTY when Frankie does his Yeah Yeah Yeah. The trombone is accompanying him at that point since it was used each time he said “I let it get away…paying every day”. More heavy brass instruments.

  46. What are the names of the new four seasons that were with Frankie on the Ice show? Did one of them get their start at Opryland, in Nashville, TN?

    Comment by Patricia — November 6, 2008 @ 10:43 pm

  47. Tom, I’ve also always wondered what the name “Opus 17″ referred to. Looking on the internet, I see that there was a Haydn string quartet composed in 1771 that is called “Opus 17″. “Opus 17 (Don’t You Worry ‘Bout Me” came out about the same time as “A Lover’s Concerto” by The Toys, which was roughly based on J. S. Bach’s “Minuet in G”, and was also composed by Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell. And of course, that song was featured in “Mr. Holland’s OPUS”.

I had always wondered if there was some similarity between “Opus 17″ and some classical work also named Opus 17, especially after discovering that the two songs were written by the same composers.

Then of course, David Chase had the last episode of “The Sopranos” include Vivaldi’s “THE FOUR SEASONS”, which I firmly believe was an inside joke double entendre for all the FV4S songs that were used in the series and Frankie Valli’s appearances as Rusty Millio. Chase had probably been asked a thousand times whether or not the last episode would feature a Four Seasons selection, an I guess it did!

  51. Re: Comment #47
Tom- I believe I read somewhere that “Opus 17″ got its name because it was hoped that it would become the group’s 17th hit single. Depending on what songs you choose to include in/exclude from the list, you can get to where it is their 17th hit.

  54. Tom, could you leave a link to that, as I looked but couldn’t find it. I’d been to Denny Randell’s site before, and found a lot of interesting stuff. Linzer/Randell’s work with the group The Bandwagon is also notable. Their uncharted cover of “Let’s Hang On” seems like the inspiration of the Spinner’s cover of “Working My Way Back To You”. It belongs in one of those “Lost 45″ shows on student run university stations for sure!

Frankie is coming to my town!!

I just bought my tickets. I was eligible for pre-sales because I was on the Jersey Boys mailing list. Do you think I’m a fan??

  63. One of the best shows of the year, except for the hideous advertisements. No wonder the networks are losing out. Managed by idiots. It’s apparent NBC is brain-dead for not releasing a video of this show or at least repeating it. I had my VCR on and the ninny did not record it.

Loved the skaters, and Frankie’s back-up singers were fantastic.

Besides awaiting the second-coming, this show was TOPS and too bad the ninnies didn’t advertise this show to death. Maybe PBS should get off their duffs and make this a production WITHOUT the juvenile ads.

To those that got the show recorded, why not just offer us a SET PRICE.
