Hal Miller and the Rays Singing ‘Silhouettes!’

March 5th, 2008

In Act One of Jersey Boys, before becoming The Four Seasons, the guys are singing background for Bob Crewe’s other artists in the recording studio. Among those singers featured is the Hal Miller character, singing “An Angel Cried” (written by Bob Gaudio). In 1961, Hal Miller and The Rays recorded that song on the Topix label. Back in the spring of 2006, Broadway.com caught the real doo-wop trailblazer Hal Miller visiting the Jersey Boys cast backstage.

In Act One of Jersey Boys, Tommy DeVito states, “And a few guys under a streetlamp singing somebody else’s latest hit,” as he and the guys are singing “Silhouettes,” a 1957 #3 Hot 100 hit by Hal Miller and The Rays.

  2. Can’t comment on Hal Miller, but I can say, after doing my Four Seasons tour research, Tommy got it exactly right in Act I when he says that singing on the corner, under a streetlamp, was a reality in the old neighborhood for these guys.

  3. You can buy the song off of iTunes, if you don’t already have it.
