Jersey Boys Returns to San Diego!

October 18th, 2007

After debuting three years ago at the La Jolla Playhouse, Jersey Boys has come back to San Diego! It’s also a homecoming celebration for two of its stars, who were both raised in San Diego County. The Tony Award-winning musical will play at the San Diego Civic Theatre from October 17-November 11.

The musical features the hits of one of the biggest pop sensations of all time, and its San Diego version stars two young men, Deven May and Steve Gouveia, who honed their theatrical chops in local high schools.

May, who graduated from Rancho Buena Vista High, starred in campus plays and Moonlight Amphitheater productions. In “Jersey Boys”, he plays Tommy DeVito, the band’s shady founder.

“The fact that you get to be someone who has to fight and scratch to survive, and even after he makes it, he doesn’t realize – it’s such a great character to play,” May said.

Gouveia, who went to Poway High and played in the house band for various La Jolla Playhouse shows, plays Nick Massi, the Four Seasons’ neat-obsessed guitarist.

“He actually was the one most responsible for the harmonies of the Four Seasons, which most people don’t know. He had a great ear for that. So he would tell each guy what to sing,” Gouveia said.
