Jersey Boys Sing at the White House
June 12th, 2006Nedra Pickler of the Associated Press reported that from the Tony Awards to the White House, it was a memorable 24 hours for the Jersey Boys. Cast members of the Broadway musical followed four wins at the Tonys and after-show parties Sunday night with an overnight bus ride to Washington so they could sing at the White House on Monday. First lady Laura Bush swayed back and forth to “Oh, What a Night” and other tunes the cast performed for the Senate spouses luncheon that she hosted in the East Room. The first lady had taken daughter Barbara to see the play on June 1, although they left a little early for security reasons.
The actors noticed their exit. “We didn’t know if you liked it or not,” joked J. Robert Spencer, who plays Nick Massi in the hit musical.
Mrs. Bush said she and Lynne Cheney, the vice president’s wife, who was also in the audience, were very familiar with the play’s 1960s-era songs, which chart the career of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
John Lloyd Young, who plays Valli and took the top musical-actor Tony, sat at Mrs. Bush’s table for lunch.
