Jersey Boys–The Story for All Seasons

December 14th, 2006

Lisa Millegan of the Modesto Bee notes that the fans leapt to their feet with the amazing story and music in Jersey Boys at the Curran Theatre. Millegan states:

Its unsanitized account of the group’s rise to fame may surprise fans who remember only the innocent lyrics about breakups and twist parties. A sign in the lobby warns that the show includes “authentic profane Jersey vocabulary.” There are eye-opening stories about band members’ jail stays for theft and breaking and entering, and their interactions with the mob and other unsavory characters. Apparently, a common scam in the old neighborhood was to fake a murder in a car to extort money from the owner.

Each of the band members takes turns as narrator, beginning with lead guitarist Tommy DeVito, the founder of the group and the biggest troublemaker. A frequent jail inmate and incorrigible womanizer, he racks up heavy debts from gambling and unpaid taxes. Deven May shines in the role with a performance that reminded me of Ray Liotta in “Goodfellas.”
