Jersey Boys Thrills Orlando!
May 9th, 2009Orlando Sentinel Theater Critic Elizabeth Maupin has posted a phenomenal review of JERSEY BOYS in Orlando, noting: “There’s something about Jersey Boys — something like nostalgia, coupled with a recognition of the realities of our lives back then — that sends baby-boomers into an extended fit of ecstasy. You don’t have to have been young in the 1960s to get a charge out of the rush of light and song and movement that is Jersey Boys. But if you were, well ... even if you never saw the gritty streets of North Jersey, there’s a bit of you onstage.”
This jubilant musical doesn’t shrink from the darker corners of the Seasons’ pasts — the petty crime, the libertine lives on the road, the broken families — and it’s full of language that’s not suitable for kids. But there are triumphs there, both large and small, and there’s the kind of singing that makes you feel good all over.
When a lot of the audience jump to their feet Friday night for “Can’t Take My Eyes off of You,†in the middle of the second act, it’s not just a tribute to Bwarie (although I can’t remember seeing it happen before in 25 years at Bob Carr). It’s that too, of course. But it’s also a rush to join in, to be a part of the joy onstage. We lived through that, they’re saying. This is our show.
