JLY Gives Back on Thanksgiving

November 24th, 2006

NJ.com’s Jarrett Renshaw reports that Tony-award winning actor John Lloyd Young recently stepped off the stage from the hit Broadway show Jersey Boys when an adoring fan handed him a gift card for a local supermarket as a token of appreciation.

Years ago, when he was a struggling actor, such gifts would have been a welcomed treat. But now that he’s got a steady gig playing Frankie Valli on Broadway, he wanted to put it to good use and searched high and low for someone, or someplace, to use the gift card.

That search landed him yesterday in the kitchen of St. Lucy’s homeless shelter in Jersey City. In the midst of cutting lettuce and other vegetables in preparation of a meal for roughly 90 of the area’s homeless, JLY stated,

“There’s a lot that comes when people know your face and they are appreciative of what you do. It’s important that people not only know who you are, but what you stand for.”

In addition to volunteering at the Grove Street shelter, Young handed out that gift card to Esmeralda Daley, a staff member at the shelter for the past 13 years.
