John Lloyd Young Has Done His Homework to Play Valli!

November 5th, 2005

Broadway.com’s Katie Riegel profiles the actor John Lloyd Young, who is making his Broadway debut in Jersey Boys, playing ‘60s singing sensation Frankie Valli. Young, who is in his late 20’s, claims he’s grown up all over the place, but calls Plattsburgh, New York his hometown. Following graduation from Brown University and moving to New York, Young worked his way up through the ranks of the theater scene with roles in numerous regional and off-Broadway productions, but most have been straight plays.

Although Young auditioned, but didn’t land the part of Frankie Valli in the La Jolla Playhouse production last year, he says he was up for the task when he received the call a year later to headline the Broadway show! To prepare for the part, Young hopped on a plane only weeks after being cast to catch Valli perform live in Vegas. To keep his performance top-notch, Young says he avoids caffeine and alcohol, gets lots of sleep, and eats food “right out of your first-grade nutrition handbook.”

As for the Tony-buzz with such a major part, Young states that the rewards are already here because he’s getting to do what he loves.
