Latest Jersey Boys’ Tony Predictions
May 14th, 2006With only two more days to go until the Tony nominations are announced, entertainment reporters from around the globe continue to make their predictions.
As for Best Musical, NorthJersey.com’s Robert Feldberg states that two shows stood above the rest, Jersey Boys and The Drowsy Chaperone, and they’re “sure things.†He also predicts that the Oprah Winfrey influence was pivotal in turning The Color Purple into a hit, and that show, in a bow to her as well the production, will make it. With Tarzan, the last show of the season, flaming out, the fourth slot will probably go to The Wedding Singer.
Seattle Times theatre critic Misha Berson partially agrees with Feldberg’s Tony predictions. She says the two new hits with broad critical endorsement, Jersey Boys and The Drowsy Chaperone are shoo-ins, and despite mixed reviews, The Color Purple is a likely nominee. As for the fates of the latecomer musicals The Wedding Singer, and the more negatively reviewed Lestat and Hot Feet, the jury’s still out. Most likely to endure, at least on branding, is Disney’s live remake of its animated musical Tarzan.
As for Best Actor in A Musical, Feldberg names Jersey Boys’ John Lloyd Young as a distinct possibility, in addition to Michael Cerveris (Sweeney Todd), Harry Connick Jr. (The Pajama Game), Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone) and Stephen Lynch (The Wedding Singer).
