  1. It never ceases to amaze me about the stories Joey Reynolds tells, and the sophisticated contributions he has made to all disc jockeys in radio.

In this podcast, he describes a very complex technique of phasing two turntables with the same record to create an interesting sound effect. This depends on the two turntables operating at slightly different speed and simultaneously run into the control board, creating alternate reinforcement and cancellation of the sound from each record. This technique makes the “scratching” effects by today’s club DJs seem like child’s play in comparison.

Also, Joey Reynolds came up with the idea for “Pop Tops”, where call letters of various radio stations are custom incorporated into a record’s instrumental introduction. He began this while at WKBW Buffalo, and there is an interesting website link devoted to a collection of these.

This is perhaps an outgrowth of the custom “Big Girls Don’t Cry” Joey Reynolds Theme.
