More Tony Buzz for Jersey Boys and John Lloyd Young
February 1st, 2006Considering it’s been pretty quiet on the Rialto since all the holiday tourists have gone home, New York Post’s Michael Reidel took advantage of the lull to chat with half a dozen theater insiders to get a sense of how the second half of the 2005-2006 theater season might shape up. Reidel gives a rundown of the stars, shows, trends and Tony Award rivalries insiders think Broadway will be buzzing about in the coming months.
In the category of Best Musical, Jersey Boys is the industry favorite for the Tony prize. Among Jersey Boys’ contenders are Tarzan, the latest musical from Disney that has the makings of a hit, and The Wedding Singer, which begins performances in Seattle next week.
In the Best Actor category, Reidel says there’s a very nice rivalry shaping up between of Sweeney Todd’s Michael Cerveris and Jersey Boys’ John Lloyd Young. Reidel, however, thinks a pitfall for Young is his voice. Can he continue to hit those insanely high notes night after night?
Although hitting the high notes like the legendary Frankie Valli eight times a week is an extraordinary demanding role, Young has taken great precautions to protect the voice that’s thrilling audiences nightly. According to many interviews, Young says he hasn’t touched a drop of alcohol or caffeine, gets lots of sleep, and eats extremely healthy foods. Additionally, he has a regular routine of warming up before and cooling down after every performance. With a regimen like that, I think Young’s chances of taking home the Tony are pretty high!
