More Tony Talk for Jersey Boys

May 6th, 2006

On his Gold Derby blog, Tom O’Neil reports that Variety reporter David Rooney provides bold speculation for this year’s Tony race for Best Musical. Rooney stated,

“Early speculation in the best musical category has centered on two shows. The Color Purple drew a mixed critical response but has blossomed into a bonafide hit. Jersey Boys also has found solid commercial footing. But even a superior example of the jukebox musical has to contend with industry prejudice against the much-derided assembly genre — the lack of an original score in this biotuner about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons might count against it.”

Although Jersey Boys is lacking an original score (in the Broadway sense of originality), the music of Bob Gaudio (and other composers in the musical) is MORE creative, catchy, and harmonious, and sharper than any of the other Broadway musicals currently playing. Additionally, the cast is extraordinarily talented, and the story is both entertaining and compelling. These combined elements make Jersey Boys the complete entertainment package and well-deserving of this year’s Tony Award for Best Musical.

Any predictions as to how the Tony voters will cast their Best Musical vote?
