As JERSEY BOYS celebrates TEN years on the Great White Way next month, David Sheward of NewYork.com explores why the show is such a success. Check out a preview below:

Innovative Storytelling
Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice’s book tells the story of the formation, rise and dissolution of the group through four symbolic seasons, with each member telling part of the narrative for his point of view. Spring is the early days of the boys, told by Tommy DeVito. Bob Gaudio narrates the Summer segment, explaining Tommy was not the brains behind their success, as he claims. In Fall, Nick Massi recounts how Tommy’s gambling debts send the Seasons into a tailspin financially and emotionally. Then Winter sets in with Frankie relating how the group split up, but are enjoying one final reunion.

The Dynamic Staging
Director Des McAnuff was nominated for a Tony for Jersey Boys thanks to the creative way that performances by the Four Seasons are woven into the history lesson. When the show goes into “concert mode,” you really feel like you are at a performance by Frankie Valli and the guys. This is aided by the on-stage band — especially the horn section grooving on a catwalk behind the singers.

  2. This show just makes you feel good. The guys make you feel like you are their friends and that they are singing and talking just to you. I love this show and have seen it at least 30 times. I hope for 10 more years!
